Fireside Chat with Tory Burch!
Where do we begin?! Oh yea, how about we start with an Oh My Gosh!!! We had the opportunity to meet fashion power house Tory Burch!! Yes, The Tory Burch!!! A small group of women business owners, including ShuEsq, were given the opportunity to personally meet Tory and tell her about our business. Tory eagerly awaited to hear about each of our businesses, and showed a warm sense of appreciation to have the opportunity to hear our stories. As we approached Tory, yes we were a bit nervous, but we couldn’t help but think of the biblical scripture, “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.” One thing to know about ShuEsq is that we were built on our faith in God!
Let’s just say when we embarked on this journey to start ShuEsq, neither of us ever imagined having the opportunity to meet Tory Burch. So yes, we are definitely believers that your dreams have the power to take you places you could never imagine. And although ShuEsq is still young, it is doing just that for us!
For those of you who might not know, the Tory Burch Foundation established a partnership with Bank of America in an effort to connect women entrepreneurs with affordable capital for their business. And this past Wednesday, April 13, 2016, Bank of America and the Tory Burch Foundation hosted a “Fireside Chat with Tory Burch” in Dallas. Even though the forum pertained to challenges women entrepreneurs may face, we believe, her advice can be applied to any barrier. Whether your barrier lies in pursuing higher education, transitioning into a different professional industry, striving towards a job promotion, starting a business, or you are attempting to find your purpose, we want to share her advice in hopes of encouraging you to push past your fears and give you hope to overcome whatever obstacle you are or will encounter.
The first piece of advice given to us all eagerly awaiting to hear Tory speak, was from a Bank of America employee who stated, “No shortcuts to a place worth going.” This quote stood out for so many reasons, but the most important reason is because in today’s society, we do not appreciate the journey in getting to wherever we are destined to be. It becomes hard to trust the process when we are constantly surrounded by “quick” success stories. We often think to ourselves, “When is our time going to come?” The truth of the matter is, we all have a story and our story is really not about us! I know, kind of shocking right? Our story is really about providing inspiration to the next person who aspires to be where we are once we have “arrived”, and even while on our way to “arrival".
And if you truly think about it, we all have that one person’s story we refer to at our times of despair so that we can find the motivation to continue our own journey. And if their story was not there, do you think you will be motivated to continue your journey? We personally think the stories of those we admire have given us the encouragement we needed to continue our own personal journeys. And honestly, the person you truly admire did not succeed overnight. It took TIME and a ton of obstacles to overcome prior to their dreams or aspirations coming into fruition. So please appreciate your journey, and give yourself credit for how far you have come!
Ok, now back to Tory! Tory advised us to not be afraid to embrace our ambition. Yessss, Tory!!! As the saying goes, “God bless the woman with ambition.” ShuEsq could not agree more. Be proud of your ambition, and apply your ambition in every aspect of your life! Tory also reiterated that as an entrepreneur you have to just go through whatever it is. Look forward, don’t look back, just go with it! This advice can be applied in our everyday lives, not just entrepreneurship. At times, we often internalize our failures and disappointments, but it is pivotal for us to not become grounded in our disappointments and failures.
The last two key points we would like to share with you is that Tory reminded us that tenacity is key to entrepreneurship. First, while tenacity is definitely essential in entrepreneurship, our tenacity can also be applied to our professional and personal lives, as well as our educational goals. Lastly, Tory made us aware that we all have a social responsibility to give back in any capacity. ShuEsq believes that Tory Burch is a prime example of someone who truly gives back. We must recognize that giving back is not always about monetary donations, but it could be participating in a local food or clothing drive, volunteering for a cause you are passionate about, or using your gifts and skills to help a person in need.
On a final note, let’s allow our gifts to make room for us! But most importantly, let’s remember our story is not about us, it is about inspiring the next!
