#DreamMoreThanOneDream Until Your Last Days: In Memory of Carolyn Warren
#DreamingMoreThanOneDream is not just a cute phrase we came up with randomly. (FYI, we own it). It is something we here at ShuEsq wholeheartedly believe in because it is Our real life. And, as we are learning, it is the real life of so many of you as well.
We applaud you all and want to encourage others to get the most out of this one life we have to live. The common phrase is that “life is short”. And even if you believe alternatively that “life is long”, one thing we all can agree on is that we never really know the day when life will end.
Carolyn was just diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer in June 2017 after experiencing severe stomach pains. At age 30. Given six months to live, she began to write about her life through her difficulties. By sharing her personal experiences, she engaged in a healing process that helped her rise to her full potential and reflect on what she had learned along the way. She self-published these reflections in a book entitled, Carolyn’s Journey: When a Caterpillar Metamorphosis into a Butterfly. But, this book was not just about Carolyn. She cared enough to include a guide that was equipped for readers to reflect on their goals and receive positive affirmations. We also think it is admirable that Carolyn chose to self-publish. She did not feel the need to wait for anyone to publish her journey.
Throughout features of various others, we have asked, how do people get through their obstacles? Even though cancer is unquestionably a daunting obstacle, Carolyn has said, “make it look easy, when it’s not”. Why though? Why would someone battling such a serious obstacle, want to make it look easy? “Because you never know who you are motivating and inspiring. Life is fragile, precious, and unpredictable. Cherish it. Continue to live your best life and stay happy. Happiness is a choice”.
Choosing happiness was not just a cute phrase for Carolyn. Even in the last months of her life, Carolyn chose to celebrate. She celebrated her life during a beautiful event on January 20, 2018, with proceeds benefiting her journey AND supporting cancer survivors. Celebration can be a form of a self-care, which we wholeheartedly believe in. What else did Carolyn do to get through? She searched for outlets and positive people to surround herself with. That is self-care too. Who do you have around you helping push you through? Are they speaking life or discouragement?
A peruse of Carolyn’s social media gave us some additional encouragement. She reminded us that, “Life is a journey; it’s all about growing, changing, and coming to terms with who you are. Loving and appreciating those in your life. Life is what you make it”.
