Dreaming More Than One Dream: Attorney, Writer, & Dancer Kourtni Rashon Mason
If you haven’t heard by now, ShuEsq is not just about shoes, but also about inspiring you to birth the multiple dreams inside of you. In ShuEsq’s quest to continue to inspire you, our new blog post features a multi-dimensional woman who without a doubt embodies ShuEsq’s principle of “Dream more than one Dream.”
Without further Ado…
Meet Attorney and Writer of the children’s book series entitled, “Little Miss Dancey Pants”, Kourtni Mason. Kourtni currently practices as in-house counsel for an insurance company and previously worked for a private defense law firm. While she is also the author of a children’s book series, she is currently working on her first self-help book entitled “Dreams Don’t Have Deadlines”. Oh and let’s not forget, she is a professional dancer too! That’s right, she danced professionally in the motion picture “The Great Debaters”, with the Atlanta Hawks organization during the 2008-2009 NBA season, and during the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show starring Beyonce.
Kourtni considers “Dream more than one Dream” to be her personal mantra as she believes her identity as a multi-dimensional individual provides her with the ability to excel in more than one field. More importantly, it prevents her from limiting her aspirations. Simply put, settling is not an option. Despite the fact that Kourtni’s goals are not necessarily similar pursuits, they are all equally important to her. Additionally, Kourtni firmly believes that if she passionately pursues her purpose, it will position her to help many others. Kourtni views her service as inspiring others to achieve their dreams by achieving her own! ShuEsq is definitely in agreeance that our dreams should also serve as public service.
In light of her myriad of dreams, Kourtni will be the first to tell you, it has been a very challenging, but rewarding journey! Although choosing to simultaneously work full-time as an Attorney while building her brand as an author, she believes that working towards multiple goals allows you to grow, pushes you past your comfort zone, and also expands your creativity because it requires you to perform at a higher level. Kourtni attributes her courage for going after more than one dream to always being someone who subscribed to the idea that we are only limited by our imagination. Kourtni realizes there is no way for her to know if her dreams can be realized if she does not try. She pushes her fears aside and gets to business! Kourtni knows for sure that she will miss every shot she does not take, so she puts one foot in front of the other and eventually things start happening!
Kourtni admits she has faced obstacles while dreaming more than one dream. Even though she’s an Attorney, she had to educate herself on entrepreneurship, marketing, public relations, and branding. She did this by taking charge, investing in herself, and enrolling in an online business course. She also constantly refreshes her business skills by reading books written by those she believes are successful entrepreneurs. Kourtni also recognized that working alone was another obstacle because she admits that doing everything necessary for a start-up is nearly impossible. Although Kourtni admits she did not learn the importance of building a team, or at least having a partner sooner, she now has interns and people who are strong in areas that she may be weak.
And for those of you who believe that your goals are unattainable, Kourtni’s advice to you is, recognize we all have greatness within us and trust your greatness. Be brave, and do not waste time selling yourself short. You too, can live the life you want and fulfill your dreams. But, you have to put in the work, dreams don’t work unless you do! Like Kournti says, let us not forget that we all have greatness within ourselves!! At times, we are our biggest obstacle. We sell ourselves short by not tapping into and believing in the greatness that lies within all of us. On a final note, most importantly Kourtni says if you have the desire and ability to do multiple things, why waste it? ShuEsq believes it is important to identify your true desires and abilities, instead of chasing after every opportunity that may not speak to your unique passion and strengths. When dreaming multiple dreams, some days the only thing to carry you through, is your passion.
Kourtni’s favorite quote for those of us who either lack confidence, motivation, or the belief to “Dream more than one Dream” is the notable quote by Marianne Williamson written in her book “Return to Love”. Williamson says:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You’re playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.”
